Most hospital bag lists are written for the person giving birth. Fair enough. But labor can run long, and a dad who is hungry, out of battery and wearing yesterday’s shirt is not much help to anyone.

Pack your own bag around week 35 and keep it by the door or in the car.

The essentials

  • Phone charger with a long cable. Outlets in delivery rooms are never near the chair.
  • A power bank. For when the long cable is still not long enough.
  • Snacks that do not smell. Granola bars, nuts, crackers. Skip the tuna.
  • A refillable water bottle.
  • Change of clothes, plus one extra shirt. Things get messy.
  • Toiletries. Toothbrush, deodorant, any meds you take.
  • Cash or a card for parking and vending machines.

The things that make you useful

  • A printed copy of the birth plan, if you made one, so you can speak up for it.
  • The car seat, already installed. Many hospitals will not discharge you until they see one.
  • A list of who to text and when. Decide with your partner in advance who hears the news first.
  • Her favorite lip balm and hair ties. You will be asked for both.

The comfort upgrades

  • A pillow from home. Hospital pillows are thin, and the pull-out chair is worse.
  • Comfortable shoes or slides. You will be on your feet more than you think.
  • Headphones. For the quiet stretches, or for a playlist she picked.

What you can leave at home

Laptop, work, and anything you would be upset to lose. The hospital provides diapers and basic newborn supplies for your stay, so you do not need to pack a full nursery.

Pack the bag early, then forget about it. The night labor starts is not the night to find the charger.
